About

Located between El Camino Real and the Caltrain tracks, Lloyden Park has the most suburban atmosphere of all the neighborhoods in Atherton. Once the estate of a wealthy industrialist at the turn of the 20th century, Lloyden Park was subdivided in the late 1920s into 86 single-family homes on 1/3 acre parcels. It is the only neighborhood in town with underground utilities, street lights, and sidewalks.

Although many of the homes have undergone extensive interior remodeling, the neighborhood retains much of its original character. Architectural styles run the gamut from Tudor Revival to Mediterranean to shingled Colonials. Architectural enthusiasts will appreciate that two houses were actually constructed as “Homes of the Future” for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition held on San Francisco’s Treasure Island.

For students in kindergarten through the 8th grade, Lloyden Park is within the boundaries of the Redwood City School District, and they attend Selby Lane Elementary School. High school students attend Sequoia High School District’s Menlo-Atherton High School. Many neighborhood families choose to avail themselves of the wonderful private schools in the area, including Sacred Heart School, the Phillips Brooks School, and Menlo School.

The Fair Oaks Caltrain station is one block away from the main gates of Lloyden Park, as are Atherton’s library, post office, and town hall. Nearby Holbrook-Palmer Park offers a recreation venue for both kids and adults with a playground, tennis courts, and walking gardens. In addition, San Mateo County operates 19 separate parks, 3 regional trails and numerous other open spaces and preserves along the bay, at the coast, and in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Lloyden Park’s property values have climbed more slowly than the surrounding areas. The primary reason is that builders tend to avoid the smaller lots and close proximity to Caltrain. Because of the neighborhood’s small size, it is rare for more than two Lloyden Park homes to be on the market in any given month.
