About

South Palo Alto encompasses eleven smaller sub-neighborhoods in total, making it one of the largest regions within Palo Alto.

Homes may be more modest in size, but this area and all it has to offer are nothing to scoff at. With impressive renovations in the last decade, Mitchell Park Library and Community Center are now amongst the crown jewels of the community. Its state-of-the-art community space and neighboring 21-acre park are central for community activities. In addition, residents have no shortage of options with additional access to Cubberley Community Center and Oshman Family JCC, with its exceptional gym that is open to all residents regardless of religious affiliation.

Although home styles are diverse, South Palo Alto is most known for its Eichlers built during the 1960s. The brainchild of architect Joseph Eichler, the homes feature open floor plans, with seamless indoor/outdoor living, embodying the “California modern” aesthetic. Eichler built more Eichlers in Palo Alto, over 2,700, than in any other town. The sub-neighborhood of Greenmeadow is arguably the best example of Eichler’s work. In planning for the tract, each individual lot was made slightly smaller than existing standards. With the remaining unused space, Eichler built the cherished Greenmeadow Community Pool & Community Center. However, most Eichlers come with some restrictions such as the single-story overlay, which protects the architectural continuity and functionality of the surrounding tract while also protecting privacy.

Between the neighborhood’s world class community offerings, esteemed schools, and six scenic parks, there is plenty to appreciate in South Palo Alto.
