About
Known as the heart of Redwood City, the Downtown neighborhood boasts rich history and offers locals a sophisticated mix of shopping and restaurants, plus a variety of community events that are held in Courthouse Square outside the historic courthouse. This area borders the city of San Carlos to the north, Highway 101 to the east, Woodside Road to the south, and El Camino Real to the west. Redevelopment of the area began shortly after the turn of the twenty-first century, and continues today in the form of a huge variety of new construction that is in progress. The Downtown Precise Plan guides the area’s future growth and development into a zone that enjoys aspects of a business district, an entertainment area, and a residential area, all while still preserving the area’s distinctive historic charm. In addition to shopping and dining venues, Downtown is home to the San Mateo County Courthouse, and locals enjoy entertainment at both the famous Fox Theater and Club Fox.
Besides commercial spaces, the Downtown area also features a mix of single-family residences, condominiums, and apartments. Single-family residences in Downtown largely vary in age, as some homes date back to the late 1800s.
