Communities

Los Altos Hills Overview

Los Altos Hills is a rustic and charming town nestled between Palo Alto, Los Altos, and the foothills. Without any commercial or industrial establishments, Los Altos Hills prides itself on being a residential-agricultural community. Large, custom-built homes with their lush acreage and oftentimes stunning views of the San Francisco Bay enhance the landscape. Some of the most attractive and best-valued homes for sale in the Peninsula are located within the town of Los Altos Hills.

Almost all homes in Los Altos Hills are unique due to the varying and at times challenging topography, strict zoning and building regulations, and homeowners with a higher level of disposable income. Los Altos Hills contracts all public services–from police to postal–with Santa Clara County. Some homes are not even connected to the sewer system, relying instead on septic tanks. Cell phone signals can also be spotty.

Los Altos Hills has a strong equestrian and biking culture. With 90 miles of roads and trails that can be explored on foot, horseback, and bike, some equate living in Los Altos Hills to living in a national park. Every year, the town hosts Pathways Run/Walk that begins at Westwind Community Barn, adjacent to the Byrne Preserve.

Many of Silicon Valley’s wealthiest have made Los Altos Hills home due to the serenity and rustic charm of the town. Many homeowners are able to grow grapes on their expansive lots and have cooperating arrangements with area wineries. It is not unusual for larger estates to have majestic mansions, well-appointed guesthouses, swimming pools, tennis courts, and vineyards. Los Altos Hills has the distinction of having one of the most expensive homes sold in the United States in 2010.

The Foothills

The Foothills neighborhood is an equestrian’s dream. Home to the Westwind Barn and Byrne Preserve and with a Pathways trail system that crisscrosses throughout the town, it is not uncommon to see people on horseback in the Foothills. The rich history of the area permeates this neighborhood thanks to its rustic feel and breathtaking views of San Francisco Bay. Driving the streets of the Foothills, one can appreciate the beauty the American frontiersmen and Native Americans once experienced, despite being in a valley that has seen incredible growth and loss of open space.

Biking is also very common in the Foothills and throughout the Peninsula. It is a regular sight to see bikers climbing the steep and narrow streets of Page Mill, Moody, and Altamont, some of the main roads in this small residential-agricultural community.

The Foothills, with its sprawling mansions alongside single-story ranchers, has a small-town America feel. In this neighborhood, one can find horse stables in a neighbor’s front yards and vineyards growing on the hills of gated estates. Homes in the Foothills offer privacy and seclusion, and each home is unique and custom-built. Driving in this neighborhood, one can see Colonial-style architecture alongside Mediterranean architecture. Plenty of new construction can be seen throughout the Foothills.

South of Foothills Park, off of Moody Road, you will find Hidden Villa, an organic farm. Hidden Villa is located on 1,600 acres of open space in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Hidden Villa offers the community many programs, such as summer camps for children and public programs teaching community members how to milk cows and bake bread with recipes from around the world. A Catholic monastery is also hidden away in the Foothills on Natoma Road.

Foothill College is yet another asset of the Foothills Community. A two-year community college offering many associate degree programs, Foothill College is part of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District. Additionally, Foothill College’s architecture and design have received many accolades from the architecture community.

Most of the Foothills neighborhood falls into the prestigious Palo Alto Unified School District.

The Redwoods

Bordering Los Altos to the east and Palo Alto to the north, the Redwoods is a charming neighborhood of Los Altos Hills. With its close proximity to downtown Los Altos, a significant portion of this neighborhood sits on the flatter section of Los Altos Hills. The Redwoods is more accessible via foot and easier to navigate than the Foothills and Palo Alto Hills. Town Hall, along with Gardner Bullis Elementary, are situated within the Redwoods. Pinewood School, a private school with three campuses, has its upper campus on Fremont Road in Los Altos Hills. The Redwoods is convenient for residents as it is near businesses lining Arastradero and Hillview Roads.

Homes within the Redwoods neighborhood are custom-built and range in size from modest, single-story ranchers to more elaborate, breathtaking estates. Near the Fremont Hills Country Club, the narrower, steeper streets lead to spectacular views of San Francisco Bay. The Country Club, which provides its members with a variety of nautical and equestrian activities, was once home to the first Olympic-size pool in Northern California. Close to the Country Club is Purissima Park, home to the Los Altos Hills/Los Altos Little League, the Los Altos Hills Horseman’s Association, and the Los Altos Hills Parks & Recreation Department. On weekends and weekday evenings, little league practices are often held at Purissima Park.

Close to downtown and on the border with Los Altos are Shoup Park and the Redwood Grove Nature Preserve, two gems for the nature enthusiast and both within walking distance to Downtown Los Altos. Shoup Park is a delightful and charming park with two separate play areas, one for younger children and one for older children. Adobe Creek separates the park from stunning Los Altos Hills homes. The Redwood Grove sits on six acres of land and is the site of popular summer day camps for children. Its nature center, the Redwood Grove Nature Preserve, is also home to the Fava Indian Artifact Collection.

The northern end of the Redwoods neighborhood falls within the Palo Alto Unified School District and the southern end into the Los Altos School District. An agreement exists between both school districts that allows elementary-aged children to attend Gardner Bullis due to proximity. Homebuyers, however, should verify enrollment.

Lakeside

The Lakeside neighborhood of Los Altos Hills, with its proximity to Interstate 280, makes it ideal for commuters. Home to breathtaking Quarry Lake and Juan Prado Mesa Preserve, this neighborhood showcases luxurious, custom-built mansions with manicured lawns.

Houses in this neighborhood, as throughout Los Altos Hills, range from large, newly constructed homes to older, single- and double-story Ranch- or Traditional-style homes. Due to the hilly geography of the town, each home has a unique design, layout, and lot usage. Many homes within the Lakeside neighborhood have beautiful green hills in their front and backyards, some of which are adorned with playhouses and play structures, an asset for property owners with children and grandchildren. Some homes in this area even have horses and chickens. Due to the proximity to Interstate 280, freeway noise may be an impediment for some people.

St. Nicholas Catholic School is located in this neighborhood. All homes within the Lakeside neighborhood fall within the Los Altos school districts.
